Tell Senators: Stop the BUILD Housing Mandates
The bill numbers have changed. The urgent Senate bills are now SB640, SB643, and SB635.
The original BUILD bills appeared stalled, but key pieces of the package have resurfaced in the final days of session under new bill numbers: SB640, SB643, and SB635.
These bills could move quickly before adjournment and would weaken local control over zoning, permitting, inspections, and land-use decisions across Illinois.
SB640 is the BUILD middle-housing bill. It would allow 4 to 6 units by right on lots currently zoned for detached single-family homes.
SB643 is the BUILD third-party inspections and reviews bill. It would impose statewide permitting and inspection timelines and allow third-party reviewers when municipalities miss mandated deadlines.
SB635 is the Development on Church Land / faith-based housing bill. It would create a by-right development pathway for dense housing and mixed-use projects on qualifying faith-based land.
Even if you contacted legislators about BUILD earlier this session, please act again. The bill numbers have changed, and the urgent fight is now in the Illinois Senate.
Use the form to tell your Illinois State Senator to vote NO on SB640, SB643, and SB635.
